£1.5 Billion NHS Investment Highlights the Importance of Fire Safety and Resilient Estates

The Government has announced more than £1.5 billion of investment to improve NHS buildings and facilities across England, with the programme highlighting the continued importance of fire safety, reliable building services and resilient healthcare estates.

Announced on 9 September 2026, the investment will support more than 950 projects across the NHS estate. Over £1.3 billion will be directed towards maintenance, safety and resilience improvements, including projects addressing failing fire safety systems, ageing electrical infrastructure and outdated ventilation. A further £200 million will fund ten major hospital schemes.

The announcement comes at a time when healthcare organisations are facing increasing pressure to maintain ageing buildings whilst ensuring that critical facilities remain safe, operational and capable of responding to changing demands.

Fire safety remains a key priority
Fire safety is one of the areas specifically identified within the latest investment programme. For healthcare estates, maintaining effective fire detection and alarm systems, emergency lighting, fire doors and associated infrastructure is essential to protecting patients, staff and visitors.

The complex nature of healthcare environments means that fire safety systems must operate effectively alongside other building services and within occupied facilities where disruption needs to be carefully controlled.

The Government's announcement reinforces the importance of identifying and addressing defects before they develop into more significant safety, compliance or operational issues.

Maintenance and compliance cannot be separated
For facilities managers and estates teams, effective fire safety is not simply about having the correct equipment installed. Systems and equipment need to be appropriately maintained, tested and monitored throughout their operational life.

Current Government guidance requires businesses to carry out regular checks on fire alarm systems, emergency lighting and fire doors, with faults recorded and addressed.

This makes planned preventative maintenance and competent inspection particularly important within complex environments such as hospitals, where the failure of a critical system can have consequences extending well beyond the immediate equipment fault.

Building resilience for the future
The latest NHS investment also demonstrates how the definition of estate resilience is evolving.

Alongside fire safety and electrical infrastructure, more than £32 million has been allocated specifically to projects involving cooling, ventilation and overheating. This reflects the increasing need for healthcare buildings to remain operational during periods of extreme weather and changing environmental conditions.

For estates teams, this means taking a holistic approach to building performance. Fire safety, security, electrical systems, ventilation, cooling and other building services all contribute to the safe and reliable operation of a facility.

A proactive approach to fire and security
The announcement provides a timely reminder that investment in buildings should not be viewed solely as a response to existing defects. Regular inspection, testing, maintenance and planned improvements can help organisations identify potential problems at an earlier stage and maintain the reliability of critical systems.

At Evotech Fire & Security, we understand the importance of maintaining fire and security systems within operational environments where safety, compliance and continuity are essential.

Our approach is focused on helping clients maintain reliable systems throughout their lifecycle, whilst providing the inspection, testing, maintenance and technical support required to support safe and compliant buildings.

The £1.5 billion NHS investment represents a significant opportunity to address longstanding estate challenges. It also reinforces a wider message for building owners and facilities managers across all sectors: effective fire safety depends on continual attention, competent maintenance and a proactive approach to managing building risk.

As organisations continue to manage ageing infrastructure and changing operational demands, ensuring that fire and security systems remain reliable, compliant and fit for purpose will remain a fundamental part of responsible estate management.
